A pattern from the gf.cx specimen book
slide-deck · greys
"A disciplined dark-mode visual language — near-black field that never reads as a void, one icy-blue accent word per headline, three type tiers, five narrative moves. Extracted from the YouExec Hardware Innovation (DartSolar Blade) deck. The pattern travels wherever investor credibility is the burden: hardware, biotech, infrastructure, any category where the technical reviewer sits beside the partner who writes the check."
The problem
Pitch decks fail in one of two ways. The internal-slide failure: white ground, Arial, bulleted lists that read as a meeting recap. The consumer-app failure: gradients, kinetic animation, and brand language that screams product rather than conviction. Neither lands in the investor room, where the question is simultaneously emotional (do I trust the founder?) and technical (can I survive the diligence call?).
Pure #000 reads as a void. Bullet points read as a speaker's cue cards — not a structured argument. A fourth type size reads as indecision. Two accent words per headline read as two things competing for importance, which means neither matters. The slide-deck-greys pattern is a set of constraints that eliminate all of those failure modes before the first slide is laid out: a near-black field with a soft radial vignette, exactly three type roles, one accent word, five moves in a fixed order, six reusable layouts — and no room for a seventh before each of the six has been used at least twice.
The element, in-page
The live demo below renders the complete token set as inspectable swatches — each tile shows the CSS variable name, hex value, and its semantic role in the system. Below the palette, a mini L3 · Anchor-3 slide composes the tokens into a working layout, so you can verify the system in context without opening a deck tool. Flip to CSS to copy the full :root token block.
PALETTE · TEN DESIGN TOKENS
Where it applies
- Investor and partner-facing decks where credibility is the load-bearing requirement — hardware, biotech, infrastructure, deep-tech, any category where the technical reviewer sits beside the decision-maker in the same meeting.
- Decks that survive separate audiences: the engineering team probes the stack diagram in Move 4 while the GP reads the TAM in Move 5 — the five-move scaffold holds both readers without losing either.
- Any dark-canvas surface that needs a premium read without decoration — the token set is self-contained and portable to web dashboards, status surfaces, or embed cards that want the same premium dark-field look.
Skip when: the deck is internal or a status update (near-black field reads as overdressed in a team context); slides must render on projectors in lit conference rooms (the near-black field loses contrast); or the narrative is a single continuous story arc that doesn't decompose naturally into five discrete investor questions.
Reusable elements
Named, copyable pieces — lift any one without the others:
- Ten-token dark palette — the
:rootblock above. From#0A0B0Efield through#9AC4E8accent andrgba(255,255,255,0.08)hairline rule. Drop into any dark-mode surface unchanged. - Eyebrow–headline–number type ramp — three tiers only: 11px ALL CAPS muted eyebrow (names the section, never the content), 44-56px weight-600 sentence-case headline with exactly one accent word, 64-120px weight-200 number anchor paired with a tiny eyebrow qualifier. No fourth size. No italics. No bullet lists.
- Five-move narrative scaffold — macro problem & why now → tangible specs → system in motion & at scale → engineering credibility & serviceability → use cases & market size. Each move answers a distinct investor question; reordering breaks the argument.
- Six slide layouts — L1 Statement, L2 Reveal, L3 Anchor-3, L4 Stack, L5 Grid, L6 Transition. Reuse aggressively. Resist inventing L7 until each has been used at least twice in the same deck.
- The "three rule" cadence — three external trend lines, three numerical anchors per credibility moment, three states per animated sequence, three layers per stack diagram. Never two, never four. The cadence becomes part of the brand grammar.
- Copy-ready handoff brief — a structured prompt encoding palette, type scale, narrative shape, layout catalogue, and do-not-do list. Paste into Claude Design (or any slide generator) with your topic; the output holds the pattern.
